GED Preparation Language Arts, Writing

Wednesday and Sundays at 11:00 p.m.

GED Language Arts, Writing is designed to provide participants with the instruction and practice in the skill areas used in Parts 1 and 2 of the GED Language Arts, Writing test. The course meets the national standards for the 2002 version of the GED. The skills for Part 1 include English grammar and usage, sentence and paragraph structure, editing, punctuation, organization and vocabulary. Part 2 of the test utilizes all of these skills in the development of a basic, five paragraph opinion essay. Each class is 30 minutes in length and incorporates lessons aimed at both the mechanics and the process of writing. There are 24 lessons in this course. The lessons are supported by worksheets and textbook assignments, which are included with the course description and available on-line or by mail.

Participants will learn and practice the basic elements of writing in order to perform successfully on Parts 1 and 2 of the GED Language Arts, Writing Test.

Themes will be developed as relevant, "real life" essay topics and will be integrated into the course work as students learn and practice the basic elements of writing. The following outline provides the themes for essay topic development, the focus for writing process, grammar lessons, and mechanics lessons. Lessons also incorporate opportunities for collaborative learning, development of higher level thinking and reasoning skills, and use of multiple intelligences and learning styles.
